My name is Tyson Wils
An academic editor and independent media & film scholar
I am an academic editor, writer and presenter working at the intersection of media, communication and public policy. I support scholars, postgraduate students and institutions through specialist editing, commissioned writing and talks on media, screen culture and communication technologies.

Profile
About
For over twenty years I have worked in the fields of communication technologies, media and screen. My career has combined research, writing and editing across government and higher education with programming roles at film festivals, including the Environmental Film Festival Australia and the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival. Across these settings, my focus has been on making complex media and policy issues accessible to diverse audiences.
Education & Qualifications
I was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Cinema Studies from La Trobe University in 2013. In 2007 I completed a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) at the University of South Australia, majoring in communication studies with a minor in professional and technical writing. I am currently completing a diploma in teaching English as a foreign language.
Scholarly & Editorial Work
My scholarly and editorial work includes co-editing a book on film festivals published by Intellect Books. Entitled Activist Film Festivals: Towards a Political Subject, the book brings together researchers and industry practitioners to examine how festivals foster politically engaged spectatorship. I have also edited other academic volumes, including International Student Visibility: Living and Participating in Community (2024).
In addition, I have authored book chapters and journal articles on topics such as video streaming services, media convergence, transmedia storytelling and film realism, as well as reports and briefs on broadcasting, telecommunications and the arts.
Policy & Regulatory Roles
I am currently an assistant manager and industry analyst at the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), the national regulator for telecommunications, television, radio and aspects of online content. My role involves researching, writing and editing reports on technological, consumer and market developments in the media and telecommunications sectors.
Previously I worked as a senior researcher in social policy at the Parliamentary Library, Parliament House, Canberra. There I specialised in legal and policy research on media, broadcasting and the arts, producing reports and briefs on areas including cybersecurity, public radio and television broadcasting, Australian film funding and online news. I also oversaw quality-control processes, editing and reviewing advice provided to senators and members of parliament.
Teaching & Supervision
Alongside policy and regulatory work, I have taught at both international and Australian universities, including RMIT University, the Singapore Institute of Management and the University of Melbourne. I have received letters of commendation from RMIT’s Deputy Dean for achieving excellent teaching results in undergraduate film, television and media courses, and have supervised masters students in professional communication and digital technology. All the students in my care achieved distinction to high distinction grades for their final research projects.
Academic Skills & Student Support
I have also held a range of academic support roles. At La Trobe University I led and managed a program of academic skills workshops for students transitioning from high school to university. At RMIT I worked as an academic learning advisor, providing one-to-one English and academic literacy support to international and at-risk students, and designing, delivering and evaluating writing and study-skills workshops for undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts.
Current Practice
This combination of research, policy, teaching and academic support informs my current practice as an editor, writer and presenter, and underpins my commitment to clear, rigorous and accessible communication.
