DR TYSON WILS
About me
For over 20 years I have worked in the areas of communication technologies, media and screen. I have been a researcher, writer and editor in both government and higher education settings. I have also worked as a film programmer at film festivals including the Environmental Film Festival Australia and Human Rights Arts and Film Festival.

I was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Cinema Studies in 2013 from La Trobe University. In 2007 I was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) from the University of South Australia. My major was in communication studies and my minor in professional and technical writing. I am currently completing a diploma in teaching english as a foreign language.

I am co-editor of a book on film festivals published by the academic publisher Intellect Books. This book breaks new ground by bringing scholars from a range of disciplines together with industry professionals to explore the question of how effective festivals are at producing politically engaged spectators. Other academic books I have edited include International Student Visibility: Living and Participating in Community (2024).
I have also authored book chapters and articles on a range of other media and film topics. This has included video streaming services, media convergence, transmedia storytelling, and film realism. I have also written reports and briefs on broadcasting, telecommunications and the arts.

I'm currently an assistant manager at the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). The ACMA is a national government agency responsible for regulating the telecommunications, television and radio sectors. It is also involved in internet and online content regulation. My role includes writing and editing reports on technological, consumer and market changes occurring in the media and telecommunications sectors.

I have previously been employed as a senior researcher in social policy at the Parliamentary Library, Parliament House, Canberra. In that role I specialised in legal and policy research in the areas of media, broadcasting and the arts. The research reports and briefs I published included on cybersecurity, public radio and television broadcasting, Australian film funding, and online news. I also managed quality control processes at the library, such as editing and reviewing advice provided to senators and members of parliament.

I have also worked as a lecturer at international and local universities. This has included RMIT University, the Singapore Institute of Management and the University of Melbourne. I was awarded letters of commendation from RMIT's Deputy Dean for achieving excellent teaching results in a number of undergraduate film, television and media courses. Over several years at RMIT I also successfully supervised masters students in the areas of professional communication and digital technology. Each student in my care received a grade in the distinction – high distinction range for their final research project.

I have been employed in various professional academic support roles. This has included at La Trobe University, where I led and managed a program of academic skills workshops for students transitioning from high-school to university. I also worked as an academic learning advisor at RMIT. In this role I provided high-quality individual english and academic literacy support to international and 'at risk' students in one-to-one appointments and drop-in centres. I also designed, delivered and evaluated english language writing and study skills workshops for undergraduate and post-graduate students.
